October 13: The Piney Gals and Darlin Do

The Piney Gals
The Piney Gals perform traditional songs and fiddle tunes dug from the roots of American folk music. Kate Lichtenstein (the Barn Owls) and Charmaine Slaven (Squirrel Butter, the Tallboys) started singing together in 2017 on their back porches and living rooms, and found that their voices, taste in repertoire, and sense of humor meshed well together. We think you’ll enjoy the music that these two ladies of old-time music have arranged.

Darlin Do
It’s the Darlin Do Debut! Darlin Do is a mostly-bluegrass trio featuring Anna Culver, Gina Astesana and Rachael Snyder. Since their formation in 2017, the heartbreaking harmonies of Darlin Do have been polished in backyard gardens and woodshops. You are sure to enjoy the traditional bluegrass tunes, original arrangements and the occasional sass that this trio brings to the stage.

The Handsome Ladies is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to promote and support women bluegrass players of all levels. Our seven founding members met in the summer of 2012 and created a bluegrass jam, in which all of the players just so happened to be ladies. Within a handful of months, we met more women who had been looking for exactly what we had created: a close-knit community whose purpose was to support, promote and encourage ladies in the world of bluegrass.

Today, with over two hundred active members, we host monthly ladies-jams, participate at bluegrass festivals, and hold educational workshops and events. We are committed to providing opportunities for the advancement of female musicians within the bluegrass community, while helping to preserve the traditions and culture of bluegrass and American roots music.
