Love Church #notachurch

In “Braving the Wilderness”, (page 108) Brene Brown shares a quote from Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll, on the topic of true belonging that resonated…

“When you push a fitting-in culture, you miss the opportunity to help people find their personal drive - what’s coming from their hearts. Leading for true belonging is about creating a culture that celebrates uniqueness… My job is to identify their unique gift or contribution. A strong leader pulls players toward a deep belief in themselves.”

Love Church #notachurch is one person's attempt to gather in community, to celebrate our individual uniqueness, to cultivate a stronger appreciation of self and to witness the ways in which we are deeply connected.

This is community building by and for the people. Many voices will be heard. Interactive games will be played. Questions will be pondered. There may even be dancing... and there will definitely be Mimosa's!

$10 tickets must be purchased in advance. Capacity is 40. https://lovechurch.brownpapertickets.com/

Ian Maksin in Seattle + Pashas of Aurora

Don't miss this unique opportunity to see perform one of the most remarkable Russian-American musicians, cellist, composer and multi-lingual vocalist Ian Maksin at Cafe Racer in Seattle during his PNW mini-tour!

Friday, May 17, 8:00pm
CAFE RACER 5828 Roosevelt Way NE

Early bird tickets ONLY $15! Book now:
https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4189049

Opening act: Pashas of Aurora

Breaking boundaries both musical and geographical, cellist, composer and multilingual vocalist Ian Maksin has created and developed his own unique genre by blending elements of different styles in a new way using his cello as the main unifying force. He sings in nearly 20 languages: Russian, Ukrainian, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Yiddish, Ladino (language of the Sephardic Jews of Spain), Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, Arabic, Latvian, Lithuanian, Belarusian, and Macedonian. Ian is equally brilliant in every genre in its pure form, from classical to jazz and blues, and Latin to Balkan and Middle Eastern music. His passionate interpretations and soulful sound have generated a contagious universal and ever-growing appeal to diverse audiences across the world.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia into a multicultural family, Ian Maksin began playing cello at age six at the Special School for Gifted Children at the Leningrad Conservatory. He later continued his education at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, where he moved at age seventeen on his own. After many years working with several prestigious symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles in the classical realm, Ian chose a new musical path, exploring his own personal artistic voice by fusing styles from music of all sorts of genres that he listened to as a kid. Ian acquired blues and rock guitar skills along with learning the cello, which allowed him to expand the capabilities of cello in a completely new and unique direction.

According to Ian himself, “at some point I realized that music was much more than just a compilation of sounds for mere entertainment of both musician and listener, but something much bigger - a force capable of healing, inspiration, unity and reconciliation among people on a global scale. I believe cello can save the world.”

Cafe Racer and Jawbone Puppet Theater present: Beer and Puppet Theater, the puppet sla

Don’t miss the next installment of this fun-filled night of short form adult and experimental puppetry!

Friday, April 5, two shows at 7pm & 9pm, at Cafe Racer, 5828 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle

Both the early and late show feature performances by some of Seattle and Vashon Island’s best puppeteers and idiots, and even a couple of cute kids in the mix!

The early show at 7pm will feature funny, surreal and violent fun for all ages, including a duplicitous 2-legged serpent, and an old lady devoured by wild beasts.

The late show at 9pm is a special racy adult only show. Expect strong language, a dirty bible story, explicit puppet on puppet sex, and unspeakable acts with a sexy mule.

Tickets at the door $8 (no one turned away for lack of funds!)

To learn more about puppet slams, check out http://puppetslam.com/

This is our third in an ongoing series of slams. Featured performers—Steven Lipke, the big weird hairy clown prophet comes out of the woods, Linda Comer with charming puppetry and off key singing, the cute as hell Okrent-Grau Family presents “The Apple Family,” Manuel Alvarez comforts us with his gentle and hypnotic manner, The great Jason Webley will do a silly puppet show, and of course, quirky father/son act, Jawbone Puppet Theater will amaze you with what they can make the puppets do.

Spring is right around the corner!

Enjoy a beer! Enjoy the show!

Our puppet slam series give local artists and puppeteers a chance to fearlessly experiment, have fun, collaborate, and face the challenge of creating new work on a regular basis. The goal is to both create community and collaborative opportunity for local artists, and to treat local audiences to fun, new, experimental, and thought provoking performance art, created and presented locally.

If you would like to join us, visit the Jawbone Puppet Studio on Vashon Island, or present or collaborate on a show at a future slam, please contact Adam Ende, founder and janitor of Jawbone Puppet Theater, at 347-455-5558.

Stay tuned for the next installment at the end of July.

Media attention will continue to fade from the headlines, volunteer efforts will drop in numbers, but the real crisis at the border still continues. Those seeking asylum still need our support and solidarity. Come join us for a night of performances, raffles and prizes, a bit of comedy, and a run down as to what's currently going on in Tijuana, MX from locals and recent visitors.

Funds from this event will be going towards Casa Arcoiris, a new LGBTQI+ shelter in Tijuana providing safe space and services to migrants, asylum seekers and deportees.

@ Cafe Racer - 5828 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, WA
Presentation: 7:30pm // Performances: 8:30pm
All Ages until 11pm.

Casa Arcoiris is proud to be the first shelter in Tijuana that attends the specific needs of the migrant LGBTQI+ community. As the only shelter in Tijuana that seeks to provide a safe and comfortable space for trans, non-binary and the larger LGBTQI+ migrant community, we currently have the urgent need to raise funds for our everyday operations, and to be able to buy our own house/shelter facility.

Over 250 LGBTQI+ migrants, principally asylum seekers, have passed through Tijuana in 2018 and have received shelter, medical attention and legal services from projects related to Casa Arcoiris. Your support will help us sustain our work to provide these human rights for the increasing numbers of LGBTQI+ migrants.

Casa Arcoiris is a grassroots organization founded in the summer of 2018 by local Tijuana activists to support LGBTQI+ migrants as they prepare to petition asylum in the United States or Canada, or adapt to new lives in Tijuana or other parts of Mexico.

Our project is one designed to last, with the capacity to adapt to the changing circumstances in Tijuana, even as international attention on the crisis here fades and volunteer support becomes less reliable. Attention and support come and go, but the need for safe space is a constant one, and Casa Arcoiris aims to meet that need in a consistent and sustainable way.

Handsome Ladies March Showcase

The Handsome Ladies is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to promote and support women bluegrass players of all levels. Our seven founding members met in the summer of 2012 and created a bluegrass jam, in which all of the players just so happened to be ladies. Within a handful of months, we met more women who had been looking for exactly what we had created: a close-knit community whose purpose was to support, promote and encourage ladies in the world of bluegrass.

Today, with over two hundred active members, we host monthly ladies-jams, participate at bluegrass festivals, and hold educational workshops and events. We are committed to providing opportunities for the advancement of female musicians within the bluegrass community, while helping to preserve the traditions and culture of bluegrass and American roots music.
